Fushimi Inari is an important shinto shrine in the southern Kyoto. It is famous for its thousands of torii gates straddling a network of trails which lead into the wooded forest of sacred Mount Inari. this shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice.

You will find many fox statues across the shrine grounds. Two you can see at the extreme corners here in this picture. This is because, they were thought to be Inari's messangers and gaurdians.

Interesting fact:  starting the trail.. passing through the torii gates, one notices their plain vibrant solid orange and black colour. But when you make a return, you see some Japanese texts inscribed on each of them, the name  of the donator, and the date of donation of each torii.

Quite facsinating.
