Photography - Lakshmana Temple - Khajuraho Monuments 040

Lakshmana Temple :

Lakshmana temple is a beautiful Hindu temple in the Khajuraho Group of Monuments complex. Built by Yashovarman in the 10th century, it’s a temple dedicated to Vaikuntha Vishnu. It’s a Sandhara class temple of the Panchayatana type. It stands on a high platform called Jagati. All the elements of Hindu temple architecture are found in this temple, such as an entrance porch (ardh-mandapa), Mandapa, Maha-Mandapa, Antarala, and Garbhagriha. It’s a Pancharatha on the plan and its shikhara is clustered with minor urushringas. The wall portion has balconied windows with ornate balustrades. Its two rows of sculptures include divine figures, couples, and erotic sculptures (as in Kamasutra). Each sculpture has its own meaning and the way they were sculpted shows a very high level of artistical skills. Some sculptures show signs of damage due to acts of destruction by the invading Muslim armies. Some stones seem to be misplaced most probably due to problems encountered in reconstructing a collapsed temple stone by stone, just like a giant puzzle.

Khajuraho Group Of Monuments :

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments in Madhya Pradesh, India is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 175 kilometres southeast of Jhansi. It’s a group of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain temples. These temples are famous for their nagara-style architectural symbolism and their erotic Kamasutra sculptures.

Most of these temples were built between 950 and 1050 by the Chandela Rajput dynasty. According to historical records the Khajuraho Group of Monuments site had 85 temples by the 12th century, spread over 20 square kilometres and today only about 25 temples survived, spread over 6 square kilometres.

These temples were built together but were dedicated to two different religions that are Hinduism and Jainism. This suggests a tradition of acceptance and respect for diverse religious views among Hindus and Jains in the region.
